A Note to My Infant and Toddler Mamas: Summers Do Get Easier - Baltimore County Moms

To my infant and toddler mamas who feel a tiny pit in their stomach when people start talking about “summer fun” — this note is for you. While some moms count down the days until school is out and schedules disappear, others quietly brace themselves for the long, hot days ahead. And if that’s you? You are not alone, and you are certainly not a bad mom for feeling that way. I remember dreading summer too.

Because summer with babies and toddlers can feel…hard. The pool outing alone deserves an Olympic medal. The giant bag stuffed to the brim with swim diapers, bottles, snacks, floaties, towels, backup clothes, sunscreen, hats, and somehow still forgetting something important. Then there’s the part where you don’t actually relax near water — because your child can’t truly

survive in it. You’re constantly scanning, hovering, holding, counting heads, and mentally preparing for the inevitable meltdown that comes when you have to leave in time to race home for naps.

But from one mom to another: it really does get easier. One day, the giant pool bag gets replaced with a towel and sunscreen tossed over your shoulder as you head out the door. Your kids can swim. Really swim. You exhale a little because you trust that they’re safer in the water, and for the first time in years, you actually sit down at the pool. They run off with real friends, creating their own little summer magic while you sip your coffee (or maybe something more fun) and realize you’re not needed every second.

And slowly, the naps disappear, the schedule loosens, and freedom returns in small, beautiful ways. Not every mom dreads summer — and that’s wonderful too — but if you do, please know it’s okay and normal. This season you’re in is demanding, and exhausting, and beautiful all at once. But I promise: the days of survival mode won’t last forever. From one mom who has been there to another standing in the thick of it — summers really do get easier.
