Meet a Mom: Megan Carroll - Baltimore County Moms

Meet Megan Carroll, from local mom to farmer! Megan created a new adventure for her family and started Crescent Moon Farms! Learn about her farm life and her journey from raising kids to animals!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family! Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area?
My name is Megan Carroll, and I was born and raised in Baltimore County. I come from a long line of Maryland farmers, though Crescent Moon Farms grew out of my own frustration with grocery store food that never met my standards. I didn’t want to keep lowering the bar, so I set out to raise it instead. Today, I’m raising my two kids on the land while my husband, Chris, helps build our pastures and care for the animals. Together, we’re committed to raising better-than-organic, regeneratively grown food that nourishes our family and our community.

What do you love about Baltimore County and what made you consider raising a family here?
I love that Baltimore County has the perfect mix of community, open space, and tradition. It’s rooted in agriculture and family values, but not far from the city. Raising our kids here means they get the best of both worlds with fresh air and farm life, but still connected to everything around us.

Tell us about Crescent Moon Farms! How did this dream come to life?
Crescent Moon Farms grew from a vision Chris and I shared: to raise real food, honestly. Chris discovered his passion for farming years ago while working in vineyards in New York and New Zealand. Over time, that passion became a commitment to regenerative farming. We started small, building out pastures, bringing in chickens, then cattle, and step by step we’ve turned this dream into a living, breathing farm that challenges the broken food system.

What is your daily routine running the farm and what animals do you take care of?
Most of my days are spent leading from the business front. Whether it’s planning permits or communicating, I’m here making sure Crescent Moon Farms keeps moving forward. But on a farm, you’re never just behind a desk. I’m often out helping Chris usher cattle into their next pasture, or slipping the laying hens a treat of watermelon and scraps from our dinner table. Between our hens, meat chickens, and cattle, there’s always something that needs feeding, watering, or moving. It’s a mix of strategy and hands-on work…and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Can we buy products directly from you (eggs, milk, meat)?
Yes! We sell pasture-raised eggs, chicken, and grass-fed beef directly from the farm. Customers order through our website form or on Instagram and can pick up at our on-farm store, and we’ve just started offering delivery on orders of $200 or more within 30miles of the farm.

Can we visit the farm?
Yes, we love welcoming our community! While we’re not a petting zoo, we do open the farm for product pickups, farm events, and educational opportunities. For the safety of our animals (and visitors), we just ask that you plan your visit between 10am–4pm, and email us ahead of time for the address and details. We’re a working farm, so things can get a little muddy, a little noisy, and very real—but that’s just how we like it.

How do you find a balance between being a mother and managing the farm? Do you have any tips for other working mothers?
Honestly, balance isn’t always perfect. But raising kids on the farm has shown me that work and family can overlap in a really beautiful way. My kids are out here feeding chickens, helping with calves, and learning where their food comes from. My advice for other mothers is: don’t be afraid to let your kids into your work, it’s where some of the best life lessons happen.

Anything additional you’d like to share?
At Crescent Moon Farms, we’re raising more than food. We’re raising a community. Our goal is to build deeper connections between families, farmers, and local businesses while proving there’s a better way to eat. On Instagram, we share the truth about the broken food system and how we’re fixing it right here on the farm. Follow along at @crescentmoonfarmsmd to be part of the movement.
